Although my Anime plate is rather full at the moment with Macross 7 and Frontier (trying to watch them all before Ace Frontier comes out on the PSP), and V Gundam and 00 Gundam (want to watch the latter before I crack out the import 00 DS game), I couldn’t resist sneaking a small peek at this anime. Mospeada is the third anime used in the Robotech mesh, but I finally got my hands on the original subbed version, before it was even considered for RT. I’ve only watched the first episode, but I thought I’d share my thought on it here.

I’ll try my best to avoid any comparisons between this anime and Macross, but I can’t help but avoid two: the main fighter is very similar to Macross’ VT, and the stories are somewhat similar. That aside, the animes seem to be very different than each other, even if one might have been inspired from the other or not.

I really liked the character design, and the animation is very simple (a la V Gundam), which makes it able to look nice even today. The only thing that really didn’t age is the combat. Even just in the first episode, there’s quite a bit of reused footage (but even First Gundam suffered from that). The voice acting is nice, and the characters seem pretty likeable too, even if only two seem to have been introduced. I’m not a big fan of the aliens (the way they were drawn), but it’s nice to see real aliens for once.

Storywise, the show is pretty straightforward: aliens invade, humans run, then come back to fight the aliens off. The first episode is pretty emotional (but, since I’m so macho, it didn’t really affect me). And, however sad it may be, the death of the main character’s girlfriend really gives him a drive in combat, even if to the viewer it seems rather obvious that she’s not really dead…

That’s about it for now, but let’s not forget the most important part: the mecha. I love motorcycles, and the idea of a motorcycle transforming into a small body armor is really great. The transformation is fast (a la Mac… sorry), and looks pretty cool if not a little outdated. I really enjoyed the show, and am really looking forward to being able to watch it all.
