Top Three Zombie Defense Flash Games December 9, 2007

We’ve all either played a zombie defense game, seen a zombie defense movie, or read a zombie defense book. You know, you’re in a cabin/forest/downtown of a city, and everyone else is dead or undead? So you’re alone against thousands of Zombies until you either die or are rescued. I’ve spent the past few days scouring the internet (newgrounds.com) looking for the best Zombie Defense games. And here they are.
The Intro: EZR is probably the most simple game on the list. You’re a SWAT-like soldier defending a base against an “endless” wave of zombies. After a certain amount of time (in the normal mode), you’ll get to the intermission screen in which you can buy weapons, restore health and base integrity, and even buy some good personal upgrades.
The Good: Three game modes are included. The classic defense mode (outlined above), the Survival Mode (in which you are given 9999 exp to buy all the upgrades you want at the beginning of the game, and the Experimental mode in which you are given all weapons and upgrades (it’s just to test out the weapons, as the name suggests). The weapons are varied, and the personal upgrades are a breath of fresh air in a somewhat stuffy genre. one of the coolest parts is the blood/gore. As long as you don’t save and quit, bodies and blood do not disappear, no matter how many zombies you kill. It gets sick after a while.
The Bad: The game is great (my girlfriend even played it for about a half hour, and she doesn’t really like video games). But, after a few levels, it gets a little too hard to be fun anymore. In the first level, most zombies take five shots. So, you get a gun with five times that power (let’s you kill zombies with one shot). Then stronger zombies show up, taking two shots with that gun, and eventually, up to four shots with an insanely powerful gun. Besides the difficulty factor, it’s a great game.
2. The Last Stand
The Intro: The Last Stand is the first Zombie defense game I had ever played. It’s a little different from the mainstream ZD games, as your character is shown from the side, not from the top. In LS, you must fight off the zombie threat in the night, and do some extra stuff in the day time.
The Good: The day time section of the game is short, but a great way to change the classic “Menu” of upgrades. You’re given 12 hours to divide between barrier repair, searching for weapons and searching for more survivors. You’re allowed to take two weapons into battle (you switch them with Space), and if you’ve found any survivors, they will help you out (up to seven). The more survivors there are, the more effective you are in searching and repairing. The weapons selection is great, and the survivors are a little neat to have, as in most ZD games, you’re alone.
The Bad: Unlike EZR, the first few levels of LS are really the hardest part of the game. The reason is that you’re forced to click insanely fast to kill all the zombies in time. However, after you get your first automatic weapon, it’s a TON easier. Besides that, and the relative short life span of the game, there’s really no negative aspects.
The Intro: We all love the ZD games. We also love the open ended games with mission-based gameplay. You know, Mercenaries, The Hulk, Spiderman 2, etc. Why not combine those two loves? That is exactly what the creators of Zombie Hord3!! did.
The Good: Did you not read the intro? You’ve got your right hand and left hand weapons (which are fired independently), your upgrades, your vehicles (no, I’m not joking) and a huge world to explore (with a freaking minimap). ZH3 is the best ZD game, and maybe the best Flash game evar. Get it now.
The Bad: The fact that I’m not playing the game right now so you can have an idea how awesome the game is.
Well, there you have it. Get the games, and look forward to more similar posts (maybe a little shorter).

I’m just trying to get into this right now. It looks rather fancy. Let me know if you want to try it out sometime, I’d be glad to join you.
Note that the multiplayer is online, not local, in case that’s what you wanted.
