MP3 Players: Yay or Nay July 27, 2007

First there was the portable radio, then the walkman, then the cd player, and finally the mp3 player. These four devices allow us to listen to our favorite songs no matter where we are, and in the case of the latter 3, no matter what country we’re in. So, how does the newest product in this line of portable music fare in my eyes? Read on to find out.
I have a portable cd player which I normally take with me whenever I’m out for an extended period of time, be it a few hours or even a month long trip. The reason I have a cd player is because I have a cd library of over 80 cds. I also have a small case for said player which can hold a few extra cds. This allows me to take a few cds along with me at any time (even though I’m repulsed by the idea of putting a cd in a sleeve).
Most people would probably tell me just to get an mp3 player. The problem? I’m not really sure. Over 2 thirds of my collection is already on my pc in mp3 format, and I’m working on ripping the rest. If I had an mp3 player, I could listen to that music without having a bulky cd player, and I could have many cds (or some songs from even more cds) in the same space. That’s awesome!
Why don’t I have one, though? Well, part of it might be that my two brothers both have one, and even my dad has one. Another part of it might be that I’m more old-school than I should for my age (how many teenagers are playing DOS and SNES games right now?). Whatever the reason, I don’t have an mp3 player, and I don’t see one in my near future (I might test out my PSP as an mp3 player to see how it feels). They are awesome little pieces of technology, however, and get a resounding Yay.
I have over 2,000 CDs and I’ve ripped all of them to mp3. I use my portable player to take my mp3s to work with me.
I’ve had a Creative Labs Nomad 60 GB portable mp3 player for several years, and it is excellent. I mention that because most people will recommend an iPod without even considering other portables.
For those that don’t feel a need to possess the music files in order to hear it, there’s always internet music streams. I also operate my own webcast which plays the mp3s that I ripped from my CDs. That gives me a way to hear my collection without toting a player around (assuming that I have a puter in front of me at the time).
I would recommend an iPod after having tried several other MP3 players. In my view and experience, they are just better than anything else.
yourinternetradio- Thanks for the comment, I can’t even imagine having 2,000 cds, let alone having them on my pc, and being able to take them around with me. Oh, and thanks for the mp3 player recommendation.
Mike- You currently have an iPod? I’d probably just grab one, even if they seem to be slightly over-priced, they seem to be the most widely used and the most well recommended.
You can get a Nano for pretty cheap. They might be more than other MP3 players, but they just work. Also, they don’t have that horrible Plays for Sure. But that doesn’t mean other MP3 players aren’t any good.
