Many a milenia ago, in a dark corner of this earth, a new breed of humans was created. These humans were genetically altered so as to be able to run any PC, any software, and troubleshoot any problems that they should encounter. These superhumans were given the responsibility of watching over the world’s computers, and keeping normal folk away from them. This didn’t last, however, and the normal humans started to use the computers for mundane reasons (research, word processing, agendas, etc), completely ruining the PC creator’s initial intentions. After gaining control of the computers, the normal humans pushed away the smaller group of superhumans and dubbed them “geeks”. </weirdstorytellingmode>

Computers used to be for geeks. Then normal people took them over. So, we made games for the computers. Normal people took them too. Finally, we made something so geeky that no one would ever even want to touch. And, yes, the normal people took the internet too. So what is there for us geeks to have all for ourselves?

Well, the answer is not new gen gaming. The answer is DOS. I’m calling all geeks to grab some old games, a DOSBox, and to set their minds back in the 90’s (or possibly earlier). Sure, new gen gamers can remember 20 different quick-cast spell locations, or frag 200 opponents in an online death match. But how many could sit down and play Centurion, High Seas Trader, XCOM, Jagged Alliance, etc? It takes a certain amount of skill to play those games- skills that most new gen gamers simply don’t have.

The bottom line is this: if you want a way to get back at the new gen gamers, go back to your roots and try a few of those golden oldies. If you need any suggestions, I’ll help you out.

Well, there is one area that non-geeks are kind of leaving alone: linux. Especially the command line. I doubt we’ll be giving that up for a while.

True. I can’t wait to get my own computer so I can finally use Linux full time. I’m pretty sick of using Windows ME. I do enjoy the time I spend with DOS, though.
