Resident Evil 4 - Mercenaries June 20, 2007

Well, like I promised, here’s my first RE4-related post, this one on the awesome, but extremely frustrating mini-game, The Mercenaries. The game puts you in the shoes of special agent Leon Kennedy as you fight your way through the various scenarios (The Village, the Castle, the Base, and the Waterworld) killing as many zombies as you can. Wait a second - that sounds just like the story mode of RE4! Well, it’s similar, but the main difference is that now you’re in an “arena”, and all you do is fight zombies - there’s no puzzles, treasures, Ashley, etc.

The main aspect of the game is killing zombies and getting the highest score possible. You get around 300 for a zombie, and anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 for a boss. However, if you get a combo (by killing many zombies in quick succession), you can easily rack up many bonus points. So, what’s the point of this game? you might ask. Well, if you get over 30,000 points on a stage you unlock a secret character for play in the mini game. The characters that can be unlocked are Ada (Leon’s lady friend), Krauser (Leon’s arch enemy), Wesker (the guy who hired Ada), and Hunk (not really sure who he is, but he looks really cool).

Each of the playable characters has their own weapons and special moves. I’ll be covering each in a later post. Now, for the main attraction of Mercenaries (besides the fact that it’s really fun): the Handcannon. If you get a five-star rating (60,000 points) on every stage with every character, you unlock the Handcannon in the story mode. What’s the Handcannon? Only the best pistol in the game. Eventually, this magnum can be upgraded to 100 firepower (the standard handgun has a firepower of 1), and have infinite ammo. I’ve been working long and hard for this honor, but, up until now, it has evaded me.

I’ve gotten five stars with everyone on the Village; on all the levels with Krauser; on the Village, Castle and Base with Hunk; and on the Village and Castle with Wesker. That means 12/20 levels. *sigh* You can monitor my progress on the “My Games Page”. Well, I hoped you enjoyed my explanation of the greatest mini game of all time. I’m now off to YouTube to watch someone get 60k on waterworld with Hunk.

Hunk is an Umbrella officer from RE2, you fool! }:3

Anyways, you got the best ratings for everyone on THE VILLAGE? That’s the hardest one for me, by far. Chainsaws. :(

If it pleases you, we might be doing a RE4: Wii review on grumpfactory.wordpress.com in the future.

I’ll be sure to check that out. One small tip for the Village: Get into the barn with the ladder, and knock it down. Now, you can pick off the enemies and Chainsaw ladies from up top without worry of retaliation. This is best for Wesker and Ada, with their Rifles, however, anyone with a grenade or two can hold out here for a long time. If you’re Krauser, though, you might not want to try that, just use his mutant arm on the chainsaw ladies.

Oh, and RE4 is the first RE game I’ve ever played.

Mercenaries was definitely a challenge. I managed to gt 60k on all stages on the GC version but on the PS2 version I gave up. The controls on that one left something to be desired. It was no where near as responsive as the GC.

Now I just can’t wait to try out my Wii version!

I’m almost there, but I can’t really beat the Castle. It’s hard to keep my kill count there.

8. mitchfrizzell - November 5, 2007

Congrats! It’s a really nice feeling to see that you beat one of the funnest mini games in any game I have played, not to mention grabbing some of the greatest unlockables in the game.

I don’t have the Wii version (or a Wii at that), but I’ve gathered the following from looking at a couple blogs:

Press the + button (not the d-pad, but the button), then aim the shot and hit A to fire it. Good luck on getting it, let me know if you have trouble.

This is the first re game i’ve played also and i just can’t get a 60k or even a 30k rating,i gave up after 2 or 3 games on the fishing platform place cause i got so frustrated. The one time i actually fininshed i round all i had did was run and tried not 2 get killed buy the double chainsaw guys.)= only a rating of 12k.

It’s been so long since I’ve done this, I can’t really provide any tips, but you should head over to GameFaqs.com and read through the Mercenaries guide. That’s how I made it through. Sorry I couldn’t be more of a help.

Frustrating, yes, but also well worth it,trust me…I found Krauser and hunk easiest, though wesker was no sweat either,I still have 3 levels with leon and all 4 with ada,but i’ve only been going at it two days now, i would guess 5 or 6 hours total.Tips: Stay mobile until you can get a bonus chest or your back to a wall, kill off bosses quickly, they are a huge priority, and dangerous, use special moves wisely but as often as possible, having upperground is a big plus, archers are your worst enemy, always go aim for the head (duh),and remember,it is frustrating, but it is more than worth it,your excalibur awaits…

Thanks for the tips :) Sadly I just put my GameCube away, so I won’t be playing it for a while. Thanks again, though.
