SV/LYoHS/AfGSVGWB Stage 1: Round 5 Complete January 8, 2007

Well, after two months and some odd time, here’s the end of round 5, Mercenaries (PS2). Enjoy the review.
Graphics: It’s a LucasArts game, so expect the very best from them. Character grapchics are the highlight of this game, as they are simply beautiful (the graphics not the people), and very lifelike. Overal, the graphics have a very dark and somber look, matching the game’s setting in a warring country.
Audio: The game’s audio is great, especially the soundtrack, which is one of the best video game soundtracks I’ve heard. The voice acting is also excellent, but I do have to mention that one of the main characters, Mattias, has one of the most annoying voices I’ve ever heard (but he’s also one of the coolest video game characters ever).
The best thing about the audio is the weapon and vehicle sounds. You can hear the unique sound of an RPG firing way before it gets close enough to see, and you can hear a chopper before it’s in firing range. Excellent audio.
Gameplay: Mercenaries is a third person shooter, and plays like most of the other games in the genre. One difference is that the game is free roaming, meaning that you can wander around and do literally anything if you don’t feel like taking a mission. You can steal cars, snipe helicopter pilots, blow up busses, bridges, buildings, statues, etc. And when you do feel like taking a mission, you hop on over to one of the four factions’ bases and grab a mission.
Play/Replay Value: I just beat the game, and I spent 18 hours on it. Now, there’s also about 150 different items to collect, and there’s a “New Game+” available once you beat the game (a New Game+ allows you to restart the game with all your aquired items and money). There’s a lot of replay here if you’re interested in collecting, or if you just like the game.
Rent Or Buy?: Definitely buy, unless you’re not a war/shooter person.
Will I Buy The Sequel?: Probably not, as it looks to be a PS3 exclusive. If it comes to the Wii, I might just have to get it.
Moving on next to Alter Echo, but camp is next week, so I’ll be off for a while.
Agreed, this is a good game. Except I couldn’t stand the Russian Mafia voices.
That’s true, but you do get to kill the Russian mob leader late into the game, so that makes up for it.
